This comprehensive two-session course is designed for those seeking in-depth information related to labor and delivery, breastfeeding, and newborn care. We cover anatomical and physiological changes during pregnancy, signs and stages of labor, when to call your doctor, everything you need to know about labor and delivery, fetal heart monitoring, medications used in labor (epidurals, pitocin), forceps, vacuums, Caesarean sections, Lamaze breathing techniques, the role of the labor support person and what to expect postpartum. Babies don’t come with instructions, so we discuss breastfeeding, newborn care and SIDS prevention as well. You also have the option of viewing a labor video. Classes are conducted in an informal and informative manner; we encourage questions to be sure that each couple’s needs and concerns are met.
DETAILS: The 2.5-hour-long sessions meet once per week for two weeks, usually from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM. Classes meet at a doctor's office on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. This class is available in a group setting only.
For couples whose schedules preclude them from attending a two-week series, we offer single-session group or private intensive classes to meet individual needs. Intensive classes cover the same material as the two-session course -- including childbirth, breastfeeding, and newborn care -- but move at a faster pace and do not include a labor video. The private class can be tailored to fit the couple's needs.
This class is better suited for people with time constraints or who want an overview instead of an in-depth program.
DETAILS: This one-session course meets for three hours. The group class meets at doctor's offices on the Upper East Side, Upper West Side, and TriBeCa. Private classes may be arranged at mutually convenient times.
FEE: $300 per couple for group class. Additional fees apply for private classes.
If something happens to your baby or child, will you know what to do? Learn Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for infants and children, as well as basic first aid and safety techniques. Topics covered include infant and child CPR; Heimlich maneuver for choking; SIDS prevention; first aid for bleeding, head injuries, falls and burns; treatment for poisoning; dealing with fever and allergic reactions; and the most preventive measure of all: how to baby proof your home. Practice with mannequins is included. Due to the serious nature of this class, it is best if babies do not attend.
DETAILS: This two-hour class meets in the evening and is available in a group or private setting. Schedule varies with location.
FEE: $80 per person for group class. Additional fees apply for private classes.
